Harriton’s Nina Hoog Repeats as Central League Singles Champion

Nina Hoog-2016

As the defending Central League singles champion, Harriton sophomore Nina Hoog knew that this year she could not sneak up on the competition, as was the case when she won the 2015 championship as an unheralded 6th-seeded freshman.  In the midst of another stellar year as the Rams’ #3 singles player—Hoog is once again undefeated in regular season play—and as part of a remarkable trio of sophomores (with Rams teammates Sophia Sassoli and Connie Richards) who have been the driving force behind Harriton’s 8-1 Central League and 10-2 overall record, Hoog is now very well-known to all her conference competitors.

Seeded #3 in the 2016 Central League singles tournament (Sept 23-24), Hoog easily dispatched her opponents in straight sets in the round of 16 and in the quarterfinals, then she faced seasoned Radnor senior and #1 singles player Grace Hederick in the semis.  After defeating her semifinal opponent 6-3, 6-1, Nina then was matched against the #1 singles player for the 8-time Central League champion Conestoga Pioneers, Ashley Griffith—an outstanding player who was undefeated in Central League play this year.  Undaunted by the competition, Hoog won the first set 6-2, then rallied from 5-6 down in the 2nd set (saving two set points) to force a tiebreaker, which she won 7-2 to retain her crown.

Nina Hoog continues a remarkable run of Central League singles success for Harriton.  Hers is the Rams’ 5th Central League singles title in the past 6 years, building on the outstanding legacy of former Rams stand-outs Hannah Drayton (2011-12) and Rachel Benstock (2014).  Hoog moves on to the District 1 singles tournament on Oct 7-8, while her Rams look forward to the opening of District One team playoffs on Oct 10.
